About

Western Star Trucks was founded in 1967 in Cleveland, Ohio, on the belief that the driver is the most valuable asset in trucking. It quickly grew to become a premier vocational and over-the-road heavy truck manufacturer with innovative developments such as cabs with increased headroom and improved driver visibility. In 2000, it was purchased by Daimler Trucks North America and moved to Portland, OR. The company continued to innovate with the introduction of X-Series trucks, such as the 47X, 49X, and 57X, which broke new ground in safety, strength, technology, and reliability. Western Star remains a leading producer of heavy-duty trucks today, built with attention to detail and drivers' needs for comfort, power, convenience, and durability.

Here's a closer look at Western Star:

Manufacturing

Western Star Trucks were initially manufactured in Canada. The plant in Kelowna, BC, grew to 250,000 square feet of manufacturing space to accommodate the growing demand for heavy-duty trucks. In 2000, the company was sold to Daimler Trucks North America and operations were moved to Portland, Oregon. Western Star has maintained its focus on improving the driver's experience while incorporating updated technology to increase efficiency and safety. The company's engineers are dedicated to making better and more efficient heavy-duty trucks.

Power

Whether you're transporting gravel from a quarry or driving on the highway, the X-Series truck from Western Star is equipped with Detroit® enhanced engine options, transmissions, and axles that work together seamlessly to deliver unparalleled performance, power, and reliability. The Detroit® DD13® and Detroit® DD15® engines have been redesigned using state-of-the-art diesel engine technology and engineering to improve power, durability, productivity, and efficiency. Additionally, the Detroit® DD16®, the industry's sole 16-liter engine, can deliver up to 600 HP and 2,050 lb-ft of torque to meet the demands of even the most challenging applications.

Fuel Consumption & Efficiency

The Integrated Detroit Powertrain (IDP) is a more efficient, longer-lasting, and better-performing option for trucks. The secret is downspeeding, which slows the engine down without affecting the speed of the truck, leading to better fuel efficiency and performance. Detroit achieves downspeeding by using a faster, more efficient rear axle ratio of 2.16, which allows the truck to travel at the same speed with lower engine RPMs, resulting in significant fuel savings. However, a faster axle ratio requires more power from the engine in the form of more horsepower and torque, which the Detroit DD13 Gen 5 and Detroit DD15 Gen 5 provide. These engines are purpose-built for efficiently driving a fast rear axle ratio with exceptional performance.

Comfort, Safety, and Style

Since Western Star Trucks started, the company has established itself as a manufacturer of trucks built for drivers, with major product developments like cabs with increased headroom, improved driver visibility, and state-of-the-art dashboards. The X-Series trucks, introduced in 2020, break new ground in safety, strength, technology, and reliability, while the 57X, the newest member of the X-Series family introduced in 2022, offers advanced technologies, safety features, aerodynamics, and first-class comfort that operators demand.
