When buying a vehicle of any kind, it’s a good idea to compare many makes and models to find one that best suits your needs and your budget. This is especially true when your vehicle is not only a mode of transportation, but a central component of your livelihood, as is the case with semi-trucks. Semi-truck drivers have to choose not only a vehicle but a piece of equipment that is key to getting their work done daily. To ensure you’re exploring all of your options, we’d like to cover an often-overlooked brand of semi: the Volvo. Keep reading to learn the advantages of choosing a truck from our current Volvo inventory.
Reliability
You’ve likely heard the name Volvo before, but here in the United States, we more often associate that name with passenger vehicles than semi-trucks. Volvo only ranks as the fifth most popular semis manufacturer in North America. However, they’re the second most popular choice on a global scale. That’s because the reliability you likely associate with Volvo’s passenger vehicles also applies to their semi-trucks.
That reliability keeps Volvos on the road for longer, giving drivers more miles, years, and hauls out of every truck. It also makes the Volvo semi-truck an excellent option when buying used. Even if a Volvo semi has had a previous owner, the odds are high that it still has hundreds of thousands of miles left in it to continue providing you with reliable service. This will often mean that a used Volvo truck will come at a slightly higher price than a comparable used truck of another brand; however, that higher price tag reflects the level of confidence that long-haul drivers have in this brand’s ability to keep going for mile after mile.
Fuel Efficiency
With the cost of fuel on the rise year over year, fuel efficiency is a major concern for drivers of all vehicles. However, the miles you get per gallon matter even more when driving thousands of miles daily. While a semi will never achieve the same fuel efficiency as the average commuter car due to its sheer size, that hasn’t stopped Volvo from working and innovating to make some of the most fuel-efficient engines in the industry.
The current engine model for Volvos is the D13, which includes many features and upgrades to make it more efficient than ever before. These features include the following:
Common-rail fuel injection – This state-of-the-art fuel injection system helps the engine get the most power out of every drop of fuel. It provides faster, more accurate fuel injection to improve fuel efficiency while also improving reliability and cutting down on engine noise.
Low friction wave piston – The improved design of the piston skirt finishing reduces the amount of power lost to friction in this part of the engine. That means more power with every pump of the pistons and greater efficiency overall. The wave design also increases compression and improves combustion to minimize soot; that means greater efficiency and less pollution from soot.
Aftertreatment system – The one-box, high-efficiency after treatment system is 17 pounds lighter than previous systems; as truckers know, every pound counts when you’re hauling, so that reduced weight helps give you a little more distance for every gallon. It also provides better thermal encasing of exhaust energy, which improves muffler efficiency.
Volvo I-Shift – The I-Shift function in Volvo semis doesn’t just make the trucks more fuel efficient; it makes the drivers more efficient too. It constantly monitors grade, speed, weight, and engine load, automatically shifting when necessary or holding a gear—whichever is the most fuel-efficient option. This takes the guesswork out of drivers’ hands and helps them drive more efficiently as a default.
Volvo has managed to decrease its trucks’ fuel consumption by 20% over the last few decades, and its most recent models are more efficient than ever before. They also take pride in reducing their engines’ carbon dioxide emissions, making them more environmentally friendly in more ways than one. Of course, the major concern for most businesses in terms of fuel efficiency is that you’ll spend far less on gas for your fleet and keep more money in your pocket with each delivery.
From the pistons to the tailpipe, every part of a Volvo semi-truck is designed for maximum fuel efficiency, making it a serious contender for your next semi-truck.
Comfort
Volvos have a reputation for being a more luxurious type of car, with higher-end features and superior comfort when compared to other cars in the same category. This is also true of their semi-trucks. Volvo’s semis offer a higher level of comfort to the drivers, which can be a huge boon on those long hauls across the country.
One comfort feature they’ve recently introduced is the Position Perfect Steering system. What does steering position have to do with comfort? It’s quite simple: When driving hour after hour, it’s important to shift your position often to redistribute your weight and avoid overstraining any specific body part. The Position Perfect Steering system offers a 3-way neck tilt that makes it easier to adjust your steering wheel comfortably throughout the day. This can help make those long drives a little easier on your body, which can make a big difference when you’re in the truck.
